February Brings SO Much Beautiful!

When it comes to seeing beautiful, one of the most wonderful parts of what we get to do is raise awareness for, and donate to, wonderful non-profit organizations. February's non-profit of the month, Somali and American Funds for Education, or S.A.F.E. leaves us completely inspired. We are honored and humbled to sponsor S.A.F.E. and share information about the wonderful work with which they are engaged. We have no doubt their work will leave you moved as well!

Connecting with Hodan Guled, the founder of S.A.F.E. was special for us. You see, not only is Hodan passionate about the work that she and volunteers for S.A.F.E. do, she has firsthand experience with the importance and crucial-nature of the change they are imparting. Hodan fled Somalia with her family over two decades ago during a time of civil unrest. It is precisely this civil unrest that has led her back to her home country to provide formal educational opportunities for children who would otherwise have none.

Why S.A.F.E.?

"With over 90% of all schools completely destroyed during civil conflict, Somalia’s current education infrastructure suffers from serious impediments including inadequate schooling facilities, shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate text books, lack of standardized curriculum, and gender enrollment disparity.
Education indicators for Somalia are among the worst in the world:
  • Gross primary enrollment is at 20%
  • Only 7% of secondary school age children are attending secondary school
  • Adult literacy rate is less than 24% (male 36%, female 14%)
The absence of functioning government coupled with the lack of government funding for education caused 2 generations of Somali children to miss out on the opportunity to attend school. Schooling is available to very few children in urban areas of the country and majority of schools are financed from fees and other forms of support from local communities. In the wake of this unfortunate reality, Somali communities inside and outside the country organized themselves and began rebuilding schools for their children. S.A.F.E. empowers such communities; they improve the quality of these community managed schools by helping them meet their construction needs (i.e. building or renovating classrooms, toilets, water tanks, dormitories, etc)." (S.A.F.E., 2012).

How does S.A.F.E. see & spread beautiful?

There are so many ways we're inspired by S.A.F.E. and the myriad ways they see beautiful. Here are just a few:
  • 100% of donations go to schools in Somalia.
  • S.A.F.E. increases access to K-12 education for students.
  • S.A.F.E. is committed to building and improving community managed schools. What we love is that the heart of the community drives improvement vs. a top-down system from an organization without cultural awareness of the community.
Enjoy learning firsthand from founder, Hodan Guled:
