Seeing Beautiful in a #Home4Refuge

We're sharing Refuge Coffee Co.'s gift today. It truly is something to smile about.

If you don't know Refuge Coffee Co in Clarkston, GA, treat yourself and go there.

Now.

Seriously.

And when you go, be sure to meet Leon Shombana. His Congolese accent is like Christmas for your eardrums. Order the Nepali Chatpati (I dream about it). Clearly grab a coffee or tea because they're all divine. And take a load off in their home. You're always welcome.

Refuge Coffee is a special place for a lot of reasons. It's a dream that has been brought to life. It is a space where all are welcome and loved. Loved well, actually. Centered in what CNN dubs, "the most diverse square mile in America" Refuge Coffee celebrates the diversity that everyone brings to the table. You sit down with a stranger and end up engaged in an hour long conversation about historical significance of African boarder placement with maps drawn on the white board (that also serendipitously dons the words, "The world needs more of you.").

Take thirty seconds to disengage from the hustle of life and the scroll of social media to let Leon make you smile. I can watch this video on repeat.

To dangle the carrot, because it's beautiful written to, here's what Leon has to say about home, which is truly beautiful since it would be easy for Leon not to see beautiful. He was forced from his home in Eastern Congo and came to the US as a refuge. He's rewritten his definition of home after the life he has led. With Refuge Coffee, he's writing a beautiful story. We should all want homes like Leon has.

"My idea of home, is a place you live peacefully. Is a place you have good neighbors. Is a place you can interact with people. And if you look at what Refuge Coffee is doing, that is what you call home. It is a place you can find life. Is a place you have good neighbors. Is a place you can share your problems...and you rejoice with your friends or your relatives or your neighbors..." ...now hear it in Leon's voice.

And I would be remiss to share that Refuge Coffee is currently working to permanently find a #Home4Refuge and you can be a part of making that home a reality here: https://www.purecharity.com/createahomeforrefuge

Bringing the Silenced A Voice

Are you?" ~ Nathan Johnson, Mavuno

See Beautiful is listening. We stand with our friends at Mavuno as we mourn the loss of innocent lives in Beni, DRC. These are people who are so important to See Beautiful. Human rights are for everyone. Every. Single. Person. Everyone has great worth. Let's show that with love.
If you haven't heard about Beni and the repeated tragic loss of life you're not alone. In fact, if you google "Beni" the majority of hits on the first page are about a town in Bolivia, a Japanese cuisine, or a church in California. The fact that you can't read about a terrorist attack claiming the lives of at least 64 (and the number is still rising) with the use of a machete is evidence of the blanket the media has placed on the Eastern Congo. We must start talking. We must be a voice for those who are silenced - for those who devastatingly lost their lives. We must act from a place of love and we must honor the fact that every person has great worth.
This article, The Difference between Beni and Brussels, written by Nathan Johnson, Mavuno's VP of Communications, does an excellent job providing historical and current insight into the injustice suffered by thousands. Please read it. Please share it. Please talk about it. Please keep googling. Please pray, love, and hope. Please don't feel helpless. We can all do something - and billions of little somethings aren't insignificant. They can bring about change. And change is necessary.
Thank you, Mavuno, for leading with love.

Dare to See People

"Let's be people who dare to see people. We have the power to create more beautiful in the world by being ourselves and continually choosing to love." ~ Kim Biddle, Saving Innocence

What if we all chose love? All the time?

Plywood People, thank you for Plywood Presents. Thank you for Plywood Retreat. Thank you for your sound advice & mission to support organizations doing good. This Plywood Presents Conference did not disappoint, and it makes me think back to my first interaction with Plywood People. "...But Most of All, I See Beautiful"

We have new soft-as-bunnies tees in our See Beautiful store, but that's not the big news. The big news, the beautiful news, is a story of beauty and vulnerability and strength by Sarah Naomi who's modeling this shirt. Sarah is a teacher (as are all our models). Sarah is full of grace and bravery and a love of lifting others up. It's fun to unveil new products for See Beautiful, but it's infinitely more beautiful to see how Sarah has seen beautiful:
"Like many young girls, I struggled with self esteem, self worth and self love throughout my adolescence. I've looked back at old journals from high school and see pages upon pages filled with things I hated about myself.
...A few weeks ago I was invited to model new merchandise for See Beautiful. I nervously joined, put on a brave face and tried my best. Tonight she sent me the photos and I don't see the little girl who hates everything about herself. Instead I see happiness. I see joy. But most of all, I‪ #‎SeeBeautiful‬."
~ Sarah
You can get your shirt here, but you can leave your love and join Sarah in this See Beautiful Community when you follow in her footsteps. That's way more important than the tshirt.

New Hope is Beautiful

A piece of my heart and soul will always be in Congo. Sometimes that's the greatest gift. Sometimes it's heartbreaking. On July 1st, the DRC celebrated their Independence, just as we did in the United States on the 4th. Their Independence shows a resiliency and beauty of the people of Congo who work tirelessly for their families. Ranked the second poorest country in the world, they rank at the top in terms of hope and love and giving. The children make rankings look silly when you look into their eyes. They're far from poor. They give with their smiles and their joy and their hope for more freedom to be creative and dream and see their dreams come true. Going into this holiday weekend, one where many in this community will give thanks for our freedom in the United States, I hope this sweet face is a reminder of your freedom to live to give, and love without judgement. This sweet face is also one of 55 precious children who receive an education for another month thanks to this precious community. It's all new hope and it's beautiful.

Beauty: A Word In Your Vocabulary

"It just hits me, without her, beauty wouldn't even be in my vocabulary." ~ Michael Mayer
The 300 children in our See Beautiful Clubs constantly redefine beauty for me. They embody a hope, generosity and love that has the ability to fill this world with so much change in the most beautiful of ways. Thank you to children who constantly give grown-ups better vocabulary and purpose. Thank you for seeing beautiful with us in this moment and beyond.

From the Depths We Rise

Many of you who have been followers of See Beautiful know the precious Rodriguez Family. The Ellis Cuff is one of our most special cuffs we get to make. It's meaning, "when she wakes she will move mountains" has supported sweet Ellis through medical treatments and doctors visits. Before Ellis, Sarah, her Mom, was one of our See Beautiful Women of the Month. We have learned a lot about seeing beautiful from Sarah over the years. We are thrilled about the launch of her new book full of truth, inspiration, and a little hope for everyone. Without further ado:

New Book Shares Remarkable, Miraculous Story of Heartbreak, Loss, Hope and Redemptive Life

‘From Depths We Rise’ is the true story of Sarah Rodriguez’s journey through infertility and the tragic death of her husband, to the prophetic birth and miraculous survival of her daughter

“God had given us a promise, and my husband was audacious enough to speak it out. Now I was seeing with my very own eyes his belief turning to truth.” –Sarah Rodriguez, From Depths We Rise

Uhrichsville, Ohio (June 2016)—Sarah Rodriguez first made headlines in the summer of 2015 when news of her daughter’s miraculous survival spread past her small town in Oklahoma. Conceived via IVF after her husband passed away, Sarah’s miracle baby, Ellis Claire, contracted bacterial meningitis at two weeks of age, and doctors declared her condition “incompatible with life.” In her upcoming memoir, From Depths We Rise: A Journey of Beauty from Ashes (Shiloh Run Press, October 2016), Rodriguez shares her full story of love, heartbreak, joy, loss, hope, and redemptive life.

Sarah, an Oklahoma native, met her future husband Joel Rodriguez in New York City. After a whirlwind romance, the unlikely couple became inseparable and married, and shortly thereafter moved to Oklahoma with hopes of starting a family of their own. The next four years were filled with false hope, fertility drugs, many false pregnancy tests, and no viable pregnancies. In vitro fertilization was the next step, but with their five-year wedding anniversary approaching, they decided to plan a celebration trip and schedule the first round of IVF after their return home.

Six weeks prior to their trip, Joel noticed something terribly wrong—blood in his urine. A CT scan revealed a large mass on his kidney—a cancerous tumor the size of a football. But after surgery and an intense year of chemotherapy, Joel was given a clean bill of health and the cancer was in remission. Sarah and Joel took their delayed anniversary trip and eagerly began IVF when they returned. Two months and a difficult round of IVF later, Sarah and Joel received the news they waited five years to hear—Sarah was pregnant, and with twins. However, at 11 weeks pregnant, a routine ultrasound revealed only one baby. “From the moment of conception, it was always two babies in my mind. They were separate but they were one, a package deal, each wanted. I had lost one, but it felt as if I had lost them both.”

The next weeks held more good and bad for Joel and Sarah—scans showed that Joel’s cancer returned and spread to his lungs, they were showered with gifts for the baby, and Joel’s biopsy fell the same week as Sarah’s due date. “There we were again, in a delicate dance between sorrow and joy. On one hand our dreams were coming true; on the other hand, our fears were coming true. It was as if our lives were a rip current. Each time we would manage to find our way to the surface, an unseen force was pulling us into the depths over and over again. It was unrelenting and exhausting.”

After the joyful, successful birth of their son Milo, they heard the words they hoped they’d never hear again—the cancer was back. Joel immediately underwent surgery for a chemo port and began treatments. Several months passed and doctors determined additional surgery was needed. While in recovery, Joel suffered an ischemic stroke and Sarah was suddenly faced with the immediate possibility of a life without her husband. Joel survived the surgery to reduce the swelling in his brain as a result of the stroke, which rendered the left side of his body paralyzed. He set out on a long journey toward recovery with Sarah and Milo by his side, but another series of strokes cut his life short, just three weeks before his thirty-sixth birthday.

“I looked at him lying in that bed and realized in an instant I had not only lost my best friend, but my son had lost his father…How do you say good-bye to someone you love so much? I didn’t know.”

But after his passing, Sarah couldn’t shake a conversation she had with Joel, a conversation where he told her she would have another child, and it would be a girl. “Two tiny little embryos left over from our first IVF cycle were in storage mere miles from my home—a piece of my husband and a piece of me. After losing Joel, it was all I could think about. What was I going to do with those embryos? The thought that it was even possible to have another pregnancy after his death was both terrifying and exhilarating.”

With the support of her and Joel’s friends and family, Sarah set out on her second IVF journey, conceiving a baby girl, just as Joel had told her she would. When Ellis contracted bacterial meningitis and Sarah found herself back in the world of hospitals, she had almost lost all hope for a miracle, the miracle she prayed for but didn’t receive for Joel.

In From Depths We Rise, Sarah candidly shares her story—the depths of her pain, weakness and strength of her faith, beauty rising from ashes, and finding purpose in the most painful times of her life. Readers will be encouraged to cling tightly to their faith and rise above even the most daunting of circumstances.

Sarah is available for media interviews. To discuss coverage opportunities, please contact
kelsey@iconmediagroup.com.

Sarah Rodriguez is a writer, speaker, and mommy to Milo and Ellis. She was blessed to be married to her husband, Joel, for 8 incredible years. You can find her online at JourneyofSarah.com.

Mavuno

Meet Philemon. Because of you, she and her child will be empowered. Because of you, Philemon and the rest of the community of Mangango, DRC will gain access to improved sanitation. The current lack of access results in well-documented public health hazards causing numerous illnesses, childhood mortality, lost school time, reduced productivity and more. Worse yet, in a region notorius for the hights rates of sexual violence in the world, women are exposed to a very real risk of rape and assault. Our newest giving initiative to support the beautiful work ofMavuno, will work with local community leaders to plan and create two public latrines and dramatically reduce sanitation-related illness. Further, the latrines are designed with an innovative technology to convert waste to fertilizer which is used in the community's cooperative farming projects. When you purchase an item and select MAVUNO as your choice your help create a safe world for women and children, healthier lives, and a more peaceful and prosperous community - one more step on the journey to create dramatic change in Eastern Congo.

Framing See Beautiful

"Those eyes have seen so many places and that heart has felt so many things and yet you still smile at the darkest feeling and find expression in everything that's colored beautiful." ~ rm drake
The girls in one of our See Beautiful Clubs have traveled as refugees from a half a world away. They have been displaced and lost and no doubt scared, yet they see SO MUCH BEAUTIFUL in each other and the world. In fact, they filled handmade frames with the beautiful things they see in each other. Thank you Paint Love for the inspiration! Thank you Morgan Wright and Julie Owens for being so inspiring!

Inspiration from our Youth

I spent last week at 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue, Decatur, GA working with a group of girls exploring empowerment, the beauty industry, and human rights. The self-selected topics were inspiring, but the passion with which these girls care about self-worth and civil rights blew me away. The questions they are exploring are seminal and their hope to better understand, and ideally to impart change, remind me how important the work we are doing together through See Beautiful really is.

Molly asks: "Why is there an expectation from women to look and act a certain way?"
Joyce is exploring: "What are the effects of not having civil liberties on a culture; specifically civil rights as children being sold into slavery?"
Grace wonders: "Why are women viewed as less athletic than men - as evidenced by dramatically less pay when even more successful?"

While they are three dramatically different questions, my hope is that it shows this community the very real questions and confusion young girls see unfolding in our society. The bombardment of photoshoped models, unrealistic "ideals" and expectations for women, and devaluing the most basic rights of children and women aren't something for "someone else" to fix. These are real to children in schools across the US and bleed well beyond the boarders of this country. We can do something about this. We can continue to foster the lifestyle of See Beautiful and we can set a new intention every day to create beautiful for all in the best ways we can.
Thank you Molly, Joyce and Grace for reminding me that this work is not just for the present moment, it is for the future too - your future. We'll all work together to make it more beautiful.

Seeing Beautiful In the Moment (and Manifesto)

At the age of 9, the majority of girls are confident, assertive & feel positive about themselves. By the time they reach high school fewer than 1/3 feel the same way. This is a statistic we're trying to change through the work we do with over 300 children in our See Beautiful Clubs. They'll continue to grow up understanding what it means to see beautiful in themselves and others, while also being equipped with how to create more beautiful in the world. One of our clubs decided to make "empowerment jars" full of inspiring quotes for each other to read every day.
Maybe we should all have a jar. You are enough. You make this world a better place. Thank you for being here. See beautiful in this moment.
Thank you to all of our teachers who make our See Beautiful Club space so special! If you're an educator and would like to learn more about leading your own See Beautiful Club in the future, send us an email and we'll get the ball rolling: lcrissmays@seebeautiful.com

Bona Fide Beauty Film

We love people in the film industry who choose to extend the conversation beyond society's definition of beauty, and ask viewers to look inward - and we were thrilled when we connected with the all female group of producers seeking to break ground in the local film market!

AUSTIN, Texas, April 18, 2016—Bona Fide Beauty, a feature film shooting in Austin, TX, will begin production this fall. Inspired by writer/director Samantha Schell’s life journey, the film explores the assumptions and beliefs tied to all relationships and the issues of connecting deeply in today’s society; most importantly, with one’s own self.

“It was written to give myself permission to be me,” Schell says. “Almost 30 years old, single, career-oriented but with hopes of a family in the future, I’ve struggled with creating a balance in my life…Plus, there are just too many hilarious dating scenarios that can’t go untold.” Though production doesn’t begin for several months, Schell and her producers began their 60-day crowdfunding campaign on April 10, 2016, with a kickoff party at Aveda Institute Austin.

Their goal is to raise $50K through seedandspark.com, which will help with production costs. “Crowdfunding is a chance for us to truly captivate people who want to participate in and engage with our story before the film even gets shot,” states co-producer and social media manager Elena Weinberg. “Crowdfunding offers Independent Filmmakers an opportunity to do things exactly how they want to, without having to compromise their vision. Ultimately, a crowdfunded film thinks about its audience first, and our ultimate goal is to make a film that we are proud of that reaches the right audience.”

Produced by an all-female team (Weinberg, Genie Anderson, Stephanie Lauren Moore, and Olivia Gray) who wants the behind-the-camera message to match the one being told on screen, BFB seeks to empower women. “We want to shout from the rooftops that all women are beautiful and strong,” says co-producer Anderson. “This film has a true message at its core and we cannot wait to share it with the world. We just need a little help doing that.”

She recently wrapped on her short film she wrote and directed entitled, “Twisted.”

A Beautiful Way to Live

"I want to change people. I want them to learn to feel each other. How to lose and find themselves in the eyes of someone they don't know. And I want them all to feel like they're not alone, that we're all in this together and I hope that never changes. Imagine that. What a beautiful way to live. What a beautiful way to feel, and what a beautiful way to survive." ~‪#‎rmdrake‬

Be Glorious

This past year Glorious was confronted with a huge problem - a group of 15 orphans were evicted from their foster home and had no place to go.

Photo of some of the children evicted from their foster home. Shared with permission from Glorious.
Alice, Glorious' Tanzanian Founder, immediately jumped to action and took the children under her wing. Although they are safe, sound and very loved, we are currently facing an additional problem of ensuring we have money each month to provide for their food, well-being and caretakers salary at Glorious Orphan’s Home. They're working to raise $5,000 to purchase a commuter bus to transport the kids to and from school, but during the day also serve as a public transport bus in the city. All proceeds from this bus will support the children’s food and caretakers.
These sweet girls will get to attend school with your support.
How your purchase helps: Your purchase will be used to allow Glorious to purchase a small commuter bus that will not only transport kids to and from school, but during the day serve as a public transport bus in the city to create a steady stream of revenue.

Follow their story and become part of there community on FacebookInstagramTwitter, and their blog.
