See Beautiful in homegrown roses and the amazing community of people seeing beautiful who share reflections and images like this...

"We planted two rose bushes in front of our house back in the spring. We weren't sure how they would do because we've had bad luck getting stuff to grow well in the clay and rocks near our house. But, here it is end of October and the bushes are still full of beautiful roses! I picked these after church today and took my See Beautiful cuff off to add it in to the picture for you. I know that it is easy to see beautiful in the beautiful things, but I am really thankful for those beautiful things that are not necessary but grace our lives and make the difficult more palatable."

I am reminded of the quote by Saint John of Avila who wrote, "One act of thanksgiving, when things go wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclinations."

When your world spins perfectly on its axis and all is right, sharing thanks and giving are natural extensions of your left and right hands. It is when your world is upside down and the spinning ceases to exist (or is in warp mode) that giving thanks, or even finding thanks, is the hardest. When you can step back and see the bigger picture, or perhaps zoom in and see the tiniest sliver, of the beauty and the gift of that moment, an act of thanksgiving can be life changing and life giving. Seeing beautiful when it's obvious is a wonderful thing to experience. Seeing beautiful when it feels impossible can be life changing.

Seeing Beautiful in this Moment AND in BOOKS!

This month we see beautiful in BOOKS and we see beautiful in GIVING them and we see beautiful in ST. ANNE'S CENTER HOMELESS SHELTER.

Our goals is to have 10,000 books donated, hence "PROJECT 10,000" was born.

To date, we have teachers and students across the country hosting book drives. We have professors at Universities hosting book drives. We have children giving their own books. We have children asking for books to be donated to St. Anne's in lieu of birthday gifts. We have people digging into their own pockets, purchasing a new book, and sending it there themselves. We have seen beautiful and we are creating more of it!!

See Beautiful Book of the Month: Watch Her Thrive

About a year ago I was invited to write for the book Watch Her Thrive …an amazing collaboration of stories collected by my friend Kimberly Riggins, founder and chief initiator of The Watch Her Thrive Project: an organization build to help women who have suffered from rape and domestic abuse get back on their feet.

                                         

I decided to take part in this project for two reasons: 1) All the proceeds of this book will be going to Women for Women International; and 2) I believe we are all world changers. This book is a wonderful tribute to those who have overcome obstacles and it is a testament that with hope, courage and strength, we all find more beautiful in ourselves and create more beauty in the world. 

Over the course of eighty-three essays, readers will find insight, stories, tips, and heartfelt emotions from unique women who have already found their own power, including best-selling authors, entrepreneurs making change in their industries, and visionaries whose missions revolve around serving.
 

Watch Her Thrive is an enlightening journey that inspires change. This collection of essays offers women the emotional and mental sustenance to survive the brutal moments that can distract them from the beautiful journey of life.

Robbing Yourself of Beautiful

This is our Part II feature of Martha Beck's memoir, Expecting Adam. The first explored the empowerment of stripping off the armor that protects us from conforming in ways that can hinder your ability to be yourself. The armor is really protecting you from nothing and keeping you from yourself. Beck's life experiences that lead her to see beautiful are inspiring. Her accounts of tough decision-making that surrounded her unborn son and the beautiful life he would come to lead are inspiring and raw and moving and real. While reading her book we found several passages so attuned to See Beautiful and our movement that we couldn't have aligned them more perfectly, and in the quote below she invites us to think about how our own cognitive prejudice is robbing you from seeing beautiful.

This is Martha seeing beautiful on a run (after mistaking a piece of cardboard for a rose quartz):

"As I continued my run, it occurred to me that the piece of Styrofoam hadn't changed at all between the time I first saw it, when I was so drawn to its beauty, and the moment I realized what it was, and was disgusted by its ugliness. The only change was inside my head. I had assigned two different labels to that small pink object, and those labels, not the thing itself, had determined my reaction to it. This was enough to make me wonder if many of the things I reviled as ugly might not in fact be beautiful, if I might be robbing myself of beauty with my own cognitive prejudice" (Beck, 2011, p. 322).

This is Martha seeing beautiful in her reflections of the truth:

"Living with Adam, loving Adam, has taught me a lot about the truth. He has taught me to look at things in themselves, not at the value a brutal and often senseless world assigns to them.As Adam's mother I have been able to see quite clearly that he is no less beautiful for being called ugly, no less wise for appearing dull, no less precious for being seen as worthless. And neither am I. Neither are you. Neither is any of us" (Beck, 2011, p. 332).

Neither is any of us. You are beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.

Strip off the Comforting Armor and Go on Naked

 
Martha Beck's memoir, Expecting Adam, moved us in many ways. Her life experiences that lead her to see beautiful were moving. Her accounts of tough decision-making that surrounded her unborn son and the beautiful life he would come to lead are inspiring and raw and moving and real. While reading her book we found several passages so attuned to See Beautiful and our movement that we couldn't have aligned them more perfectly, and in the quote below she invites us to strip off our comfort armor - which could prove to be life saving.

This is Martha seeing beautiful after an operation:

"...there was a concrete message that remained even after the drugs had left my system, and this is - sort of - what it said. It said that the way back to my real environment, the place where my soul was meant to exist, doesn't lie through any set of codes I will ever find outside of myself. I have to look inward. I have to jettison every sorrow, every terror, every misconception, every lie that stands between my conscious mind and what I know in my heart to be true. Instead of clutching around me all the trappings of a 'good' person, a 'successful' person, or even a 'righteous' person, I have to be exactly what I am, and take the horrible chance that I may be rejected for it. I can't get home by cloaking myself in the armor or any system, social, political, or religious. I have to strip off all that comforting armor and go naked"  (Beck, 2011, p. 301).

So what if we did? What if we stripped the armor we feel we need to navigate pop culture's murky waters? Interestingly, armor would get quite heavy to wear wading through sea after sea of expectation. Wouldn't it be freeing, and in the case of carrying armor across a body of water, even life saving to let go of what holds you down and find a lifesaver in yourself? Lifesaving. How beautiful.

The Hundertwasser Phenomenon

Friedensreich Hundertwasser created beautiful for the world. One of the most unique, thoughtful, creative, resourceful artists, Hundertwasser's art has brought smiles and beautiful to millions. The beautiful way he lived his life was often understood a contradiction. According to those closest to him, he seemed to want to be noticed and invisible at the same time. This lifestyle seems to be reflective of many of us around the world. We want so badly to be noticed for the beautiful things we do, yet we sometimes doubt our strength and beauty - donning our cloak of invisibility.

We connected strongly with this idea of contradiction because there's a bit of that in our name, See Beautiful. For one might quickly assume we mean to see beautiful using our eyes to understand the world, when it's not about seeing at all. It's about feeling and creating beautiful in ourselves and all around.

He lived in a way that where he was, he had reached his destination. How beautiful. And while he never really claimed one place as "home" it was because he always felt at home with trees. How beautiful. And while trees couldn't be everywhere, if they were absent he'd simply take himself home by painting some. It makes us want to hug trees. It makes us see so much beautiful in the rooting ability of trees to offer us peace.

There are so many profoundly thoughtful and beautiful pieces of Hundertwasser that we're going to share little snippets of his inspiration every month. Though he passed away in 2000, his message to see and create more beautiful in the world continues to thrive.

Audrey Hepburn's dedication to humanitarianism lives on. Much of her life was spent traveling around the world raising awareness for children without basic human rights and needs. She offered many young children opportunities to see beautiful and for that commitment, her above quote has a resounding affect on those who follow. Cheers to seeing beautiful.

6.6.11 - If You Read It, They Will Give

The organization, We Give Books, is changing the way we think about reading children's literature. If you read books with children (or know someone who reads to children), you're in a position to donate a book to the charity of your choice for every book you read. Here's what you do:

1. Visit www.wegivebooks.org/
2. Choose a book from their FREE digital library of children's books OR choose a campaign to support.
3. Read the book online!
4. Read it over and over again, or pick a new one, enjoying the comfort of knowing that every time you read that book or a new book, one will be donated to the charity you designate.
5. See beautiful in the fact that you'll be part of the movement to donate hundreds of thousands of children's books to non-profit organizations around the world!


If you teach, you can use this site everyday in your classroom. If you're a parent of a child under 10 years of age and reading this blog, you have the opportunity to read a book on your computer, smartphone, or iPad with your child. If you need to deviate from the world of adult reading and want something to read with less than 20 pages, you can read knowing you're donating a tangible book to a non-profit organization.

There is research that supports the more books in a child's home, regardless of his/her parents' education, occupation, and class, influences his/her academic success (Evans, Keley, Sikora, & Treiman, 2010; Light & Pillemer, 1984). Children with more than 300 books in their home receive an average of three years more schooling than children from bookless homes. Further, this finding holds equal across nations (Evans et al., 2010). Thus, We Give Books can bring hundreds of books into a household, school, or childcare center at the click of a button.

 6.6.11 Hot Potato! Hot Potato!

When you pass potatoes in the grocery store, how often do you pause to think, "Beautiful."? Perhaps they are...

The following quote, found in  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was shared by a See Beautiful™ reader. While she was reading, this passage reminded her of our mission (and we were thrilled that it jumped out at her!).

"In every nook, I find little things that tell me about her.  She was a noticer, Sidney, like me, for all the shelves are lined with shells, bird feathers, dried sea grasses, pebbles, eggshells, and the skeleton of something that might be a bat.  They're just bits that were lying on the ground, that anyone else would step over or on, but she saw they were beautiful and brought them home." (pg. 166)

There are several reasons why this passage, book, and the Hot Potato! game itself can help us see beautiful:

1. The passage: Like a potato, many people step over or pass by truly beautiful aspects of life without noticing. Today, you might look for something beautiful that many have already walked over. Take a moment to explore why the seemingly insignificant is truly exquisite. 
2. The book: Without describing the plot of the book, one of the beautiful pieces is the underlying theme validating the benefits of social support structures as a necessity. Human interaction and friendship offer hope and strength to survive the daily ins-and-outs of troubled times. This might remind you of the Socks for Japan effort noted in the blog last week. The simple act of offering socks brought a glimmer of hope to the lives of those who desperately needed it.
3. The Game:  You might remember the Hot Potato! game to be high-pressure and fast, but we think the premise of the game is beautiful: Just as quickly as you receive the potato, you have to give it away. What if we applied this strategy in aspects of our lives? What if, without much thought, giving was automatic and innate? With all we receive, we give. Further, there's no strategy to Hot Potato! besides giving away the potato. There's really no strategy to giving in life either. It's quite simply a beautiful thing to give.

Perhaps those potatoes sitting in the grocery store really are our opportunity to see beautiful. Perhaps they're our reminder to give, without thinking, and with the enthusiasm of a giddy five-year-old playing a hysterical game.

Miss Twiggley's Tree

Miss Twiggley's Tree by Dorothea Warren Fox

 We work hard at See Beautiful to foster positive self-image and raise the self-confidence of girls and women by highlighting the inherent beauty that all possess in the world. Miss Twiggley, of Miss Twiggley's Tree, is scrumptiously beautiful and author, Dorothea Warren Fox, captures the concept of seeing beautiful through the eyes of her characters perfectly.

You see, Miss Twiggley was friends with a dog, and bears, not the "popular" or "expected" friends with whom society expected her to dine. Why, her dog, Puss, did her shopping and her friends, the bears, relaxed on her couch.

Seeing beyond an outward image, Miss Twiggley loved her friends for who they were, something society often refused to do with her. In fact, the townspeople often rumored stories that made people gawk at Miss Twiggley, instead of embrace her beautiful kindness.

Miss Twiggley's habit's of living in a tree and sleeping in a hat weren't the status quo, but she loved her own unique life from the belittling of others. And after years of scoffing her lifestyle, it was the others who needed her most. When water levels flood the town it is Miss Twiggley's tree, with her "uncharacteristic" friends who opened their doors and provided warm, kind, lifesaving shelter to all who turned her away. Beyond the townspeople learning an important lesson of getting to know everyone for who they are, Miss Twiggley herself learned that when you overcome fears of what others think, doors to friendship and self-confidence can be opened too. 

This book is a timeless treasure that young children and grown-up (children) will repeatedly remove from the shelves to see beautiful in again and again.
