When it comes to seeing beautiful, one of the most wonderful parts of what we get to do is support wonderful Non-Profit organizations. Often referred to as the month of giving, November allows us to celebrate the work of another incredible group of people who are committed to making this world a better place.
See Beautiful™ is thrilled to name (drum roll please!) LitWorld™ our November Non-Profit of the Month! Come be part of the story...
LitWorld™ is a 501C3 nonprofit organization that partners with teachers, parents, community members, and children to support the development of sustainable literacy practices across the world.
"Worldwide at least 774 million people remain illiterate. Two-thirds of them are women. All over the world, children are hungry for learning and for the power it brings. Research shows that children learn to read and write best by writing and telling the stories of their own experiences. Yet it is rare to find safe spaces where children feel fully comfortable to do so. LitWorld™ is changing that (LitWorld™ , 2011)."
LitWorld is built upon three core pillars: Advocacy, Education and Innovation. These pillars provide a framework for empowering children worldwide by helping them reach adulthood as readers and writers.
Ways LitWorld™ sees beautiful (Guiding Core Values & Principles):
- In the inviolable human rights of children;
- In the transformative power of literacy;
- In learners as teachers and teachers as learners;
- In nurturing students with individual attention;
- In the importance of children's ideas and opinions;
- In the right of every child to a safe and secure learning environment;
- In stepping outside the boundaries of school and reaching people where they are;
- In blurring the divide between home and school and where learning happens;
- In education with a purpose to inspire lives and build peace and connection;
- In the leadership abilities of young people and their vision to create change in the world;
- All children have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.
- LitCorps: "The LitCorp's mission is to redefine the educational model, to reach children where they are, whether it be in a school, community center, home or outside. Education will become decentralized, deinstitutionalized, and altogether re-imagined to fit a democratized and interconnected new world. The LitCorps uses a combination of LitWorld's field tested literacy curricula, traditional and social media advocacy, and LitCorps members' own ideas based on a deep understanding of what the local needs are in their region in order to fight illiteracy on multiple levels (LitWorld™, 2011)."
- Girls LitClubs: "Girls LitClubs create a space for women and girls' empowerment through literacy learning. The program is a series of reading and writing workshops for young women and girls, many of whom have experienced trauma, that tap into their extraordinary strengths and meet their personal needs. The workshops support girls' leadership and literacy learning, provide mentoring, and create opportunities for women and girls to read and write in ways that help them explore their sense of self and create supportive social networks. Girls LitClubs position participants for future success and instill communities with literacy leaders to support young women's future development. 35 Girls Clubs are running in the United States, Kenya, Liberia, Ghana and Iraq. We are working to more than double the number of Girls Club sites worldwide in 2011 (LitWorld™, 2011)."
- Boys LitClubs: "Boys LitClubs are a place where members and facilitators come together to discuss the world and our impressions of it as young gentlemen and scholars. We must teach boys to share their knowledge, experiences and stories: This is part of manhood. Boys LitClubs help boys learn more about themselves as readers, writers, thinkers and leaders. Through reading and writing workshops, as well as creative excursions into art and film, we practice these unique skills in ways that share each individual's important ideas and help members think about a global community, and their individual capacity to create a positive change for the future (LitWorld™, 2011)."
- World Read Aloud Day: "World Read Aloud Day is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, especially those words that are shared from one person to another, and creates a community of readers advocating for every child’s right to a safe education and access to books and technology. By raising our voices together on this day we show the world’s children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world (LitWorld™, 2011)." MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR 2012 WORLD READ ALOUD DAY: MARCH 7, 2012
- Moms For LitWorld: "Moms for LitWorld brings together compassionate women from communities worldwide, offering them the opportunity to connect, reflect, discuss and mobilize for an issue of crucial importance to mothers and children around the world: Global Literacy. Members take action for their own children and children everywhere, to ensure they all grow up to be lifelong readers and writers. Members are given the tools, resources, support and activities to create rich literary experiences for themselves and their families (LitWorld™, 2011)."
- The Lit! Project: "Lit! provides solar lanterns to students in developing countries, replacing dim, dirty, dangerous kerosene lamps in their homes (LitWorld™, 2011)."
