26 Toes

This story originally aired on Today's Animal Tracks. It gave us 26 reasons and counting to see beautiful, so we had to share.

"Milwaukee shelter owner Amy Rowell was touring an animal control center when she bent down to look at a cat in a cage. To greet her, tabby Daniel reached out a paw. Rowell took notice – because Daniel has 26 toes!

Most cats have 18 toes, but Daniel has 26. "He was very clearly saying, 'I need to be rescued, I'd like to be your friend, please pay attention to me,'" Rowell told the Associated Press. "And when a sign is that obvious, we tend to not ignore it." So Rowell rescued the kitty – and now, he's rescuing her right back. The Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center in Greendale can't afford its rent, reports the AP, so Rowell has to buy a new building.

Of the $120,000 needed, $80,000 has been raised since Oct. 24; about $50K of that money came from Daniel-inspired donors. The nonprofit Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center in Greendale, Wis., is receiving donations, $26 at a time, $1 for each of Daniel's toes."

  2. Such a beautiful looking cat! To bad that there are so many out there that need homes. Happy to see though that the fundraising is going so well!
