In the following video women are informally asked what they like about themselves. As you'll see, they have a difficult time coming up with anything, even stumbling through some "um, um, ums" is the best a few can do. Then you observe a sudden shift in the interviewee's. When they're asked what is beautiful about the friend standing next to them the women immediately light up and have something (or several things) to compliment. You can see the mood shift as smiles break lovingly across their faces. Complimenting another's beauty is easy. For some reason, seeing that beauty in ourselves is tough.
If you don't understand German (ahem, we owe a big thanks to Lindsay @ Our View from Wien for translating), the message at the end of the video reads, "Is it not time that we find the beauty in ourselves?"
The title of the clip is "I see what you don't see. And that is beautiful." How beautiful is that?
You don't have to be a native speaker, or new speaker, of German to read the expression on the women's faces. Talking about the beauty in themselves wasn't easy. Talking about their friend's beauty is exciting and natural. How do we transfer this love, this vision to ourselves?
The more beauty we see in ourselves, the more we can see and share in and with others.
See beautiful. You are.

Love this video! It's heartwarming and triggered memories of highschool German class. Happy Seeing Beautiful y'all and Guten Tag!
ReplyDeleteI love this! It really made me think about how I'd respond and what that says about me.
ReplyDeleteMy MOM loved the video. She said there was a whole lot to think about. I just told her all the things I think are beautiful about her. Then I proceeded to tell her all the things that are beautiful about me. Yea I said it, I'm a boy dog and I am beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Goose
Goose, you are FUNNY and BEAUTIFUL! There is so much to think about in the video. Why is it that it takes someone time to think of beautiful things about themselves, when its second nature to rattle off all the beauty in someone else? Hmmm...us humans have some thinking to do. ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy seeing beautiful!
Thanks so much, Katie! Here's to seconding your comment about taking a moment to think about how we'd all respond to the question being directed at us. Would we stumble over a response, or be confident and share? Happy seeing beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou are up EARLY! I'll share a guten morgen your way! Happy reminiscing highschool-sytle.
ReplyDeletethere you go again...we so easily see beautiful everywhere except in the mirror. We should start there, eh?
ReplyDeletelove it!!!

Thanks so much! It's a pretty darn good starting place, if we do say so ourselves. ;) Happy seeing beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI think people may be humble and don't want to "brag" about themselves....but true that we don't always think of ourselves in terms of beauty as it's sometimes more difficult to assess yourself.
ReplyDeleteThis just makes me think.
ReplyDeleteI see Biculturalmama's point. It is so much easier to see the attributes of others. BUT harder to jump on our own talents and beauties. But, a simple moment before you start your day, just say one thing that is beautiful in you or if it is easier.... think of a friend and what you respect and love in them ( I bet if you look inward.... it is in you also).
ReplyDeleteOoolala! I love the new Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, RSS, etc. buttons. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Thanks! Thanks! We're a little bit obsessed. ;)
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree. That could be a big piece of the puzzle. We posed this to a few people and asked them to reflect inwardly on their favorite parts of themselves and then to do the same thinking about the person sitting next to them. Even reflecting inwardly, they commented that it was still more difficult to come up with the "beautiful" about them. It really makes us wonder. Such a good point you make though!
