We can't recall when or why a dear friend of ours shared this poem, but its message is beautiful and serves as a reminder that "standing by" can help others see beautiful. This is particularly meaningful when we feel that ever-burning "What can we do?" question burning your heart for another. It turns out simply standing by is a pretty wonderful thing. We also feel this is a perfectly fitting poem to celebrate our non-profit of the month, Guide Dogs of America; guide dogs exemplify "standing by."

The Friend Who Stands By
by B.Y. Williams
When trouble comes your soul to try,
You love the friend who just "stands by."
Perhaps there's nothing she can do --
The thing is strictly up to you;
For there are troubles all your own,
And paths the soul must tread alone;
Times when love cannot smooth the road
Nor friendship lift the heavy load,
But just to know you have a friend
who will "stand by" until the end,
whose sympathy through all endures,
Whose warm handclasp is always yours--
It helps, someway to pull you through,
Although there's nothing she can do.
and so with fervent heart you cry,
"God bless the friend who just 'stands by'!"

The poem is perfect for the guide dogs. I guess it is perfect for all dogs. That what we do, stand by.
