As we celebrate the incredible work of our February non-profit, the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Educational Excellence,
they've whipped up their own focus this month, "Seeing Beautiful in our
Youth." It's a focus that is seminal in our community. As part of their
focus, they invited young women enrolled in their Early College High School Project
to share how they see beautiful in themselves and the world. The
following reflection is brilliantly written by Mylecia Sims. We find
ourselves reveling in great hope that our future holds so much
thoughtfulness and beauty. Thank you, Mylecia for sharing such wisdom for
others on seeing beautiful.
Beauty is in the eye
of the beholder (by Mylecia Sims)
What I see is way past skin deep
Your laugh and smile tell me a story
Your selflessness and courage relay a message
Your determination and perspective lets me understand that
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Your skin is tanned with kisses from the sun
Your mistakes help you grow and mature
Your candidness and appreciation for life
Helps me understand that beauty is in the eye of its beholder.
Beauty Is...(by Mylecia Sims)
What is beauty? Is beauty the color of your skin, the way
you style your hair, or the way you dress? Is there a common accepted
definition of something that’s beauty and something that is not? Everyone has
their own definition of beauty; what you find beautiful, I may not. But the beauty within that is understanding
and accepting differences. To me beauty is not defined by physical features.
Beauty is born when you have someone who has the purest heart and the best
intentions to help those around them. Not only can that person achieve all of
their goals, but she can also inspire others to do so. She can be a role model
and show that imperfections are a part of life and that beauty is not perfect.
That is beauty.
